Bayantel won’t give up bid for 3G license
Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. was denied in its bid to acquire a license to operate 3G (third generation) mobile service by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). But Bayantel is fighting for the 3G license and vows to file a motion for reconsideration before the Court of Appeals (CA).
The Lopez-owned telecommunications company said it would exhaust all legal remedies and will file its motion on or before September 1, which is within the 15-day prescribed period by the court. Bayantel claims they “should be one of those to be awarded with 3G license considering its track record and its commitment to roll out the service.â€
Bayan chief executive consultant Tunde Fafunwa said, “In the last two years, we have demonstrated our capability to roll out a 3G compliant network with our CDMA-based wireless landline service which disrupted and transformed the voice calling market today.â€
Fafunwa was referring to its wireless landline service offering which was later on imitated by rivals Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., Globe Telecom and Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc.
The 3G license was awarded to Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise Inc. (CURE), which Bayantel said is a new entity with no track record and which was eventually sold to an entity controlled by one of 3G license awardees.
Other telcos who awarded the 3G license were Smart Communications Inc., Globe Telecom and Digital Mobile Philippines, Inc.
